CRANES

cranes, masts, & construction

As with any tall structure, the presence of a single crane or number of cranes has the potential to affect aviation activities. Crane-related issues are usually considered and managed in much the same way as any tall structure. Because cranes can be erected at extremely short notice, a potential air navigation obstacle can therefore appear with very little notice.

obstacles IN THE VICINITY OF THE AERODROME

The hirer of the crane (principal or other contractor) is responsible for notifying relevant aerodromes and the lighting of the crane. Blackbushe is a safeguarded aerodrome, and a safeguarding map is with Hart District Council as the local planning authority as well as Hampshire County Council.

Safeguarded areas are split into zones in which different height limits apply. If a crane or development is shorter than the height limit in a given area then Blackbushe Airport does not need to be consulted or notified.

Any crane, obstacle, or development of any height. Typically we will not be concerned if the crane or obstacle is below the height of surrounding obstacles such as trees and buildings, but we should be notified to ensure an appropriate safety assessment can be made.

notify blackbushe of proposed development or cranes

The CAA recommend engaging with airports at least eight weeks before the erection of any crane. Developers should use the form below or email safeguarding@blackbusheairport.co.uk with information on their proposed works, including the location (postcode and coordinates), as well as times the obstacle will be present, height, and any information on obstacle lighting.

obstacles over 100m above ground level

It is now mandatory to notify the CAA of any crane of a height of 100m AGL and more. This requirement applies regardless of where the crane is located. To submit a notification please register for the ACOMS Service via the CAA customer portal.
